A total of 37 countries, and nearly 100 organisations took part in the global ‘blogathon’ for Safer Internet: February 7, 2006 |

| Safer Internet Day took place on 7 February 2006. Once again it was held under the patronage of Commissioner Viviane Reding, responsible for Information Society and Media at the European Commission. Insafe, the EU network for internet safety awareness, will celebrate the event with a global “blogathon”. A wide range of organisations active in promoting internet safety and special guests will make postings on the blog and invite comments from visitors.
The blog, which included content written in several languages, had a geographical focus that moved west through the global time zones, from New Zealand to Argentina. According to blog tracking site Technorati, 70,000 new blogs are created every day, many by young people. A Guardian/ICM poll in the UK found a third of young people published content online on a personal blog or website. Blogs offer exciting possibilities for education and self-expression. However many young people are unaware of important ethical, legal and safety issues. Posting of personal information and publishing of copyright material are among the online practices that have caused concern. The blogathon will aim to raise awareness about such issues and enable parents, teachers and young people in particular to share experiences and cultural attitudes about their use of new technologies. The blogathon wa just one of a host of events that will take place across the world on Safer Internet Day. The event builds on the success of Safer Internet Day in 2005, when 65 organisations from 30 countries took part. Last year’s event included the launch of a stoytelling competition for children. Following national ceremonies including VIPs such as Princess Alexandra of Denmark and President Grimssson of Iceland, a book of their stories has been published. Insafe, a network of 23 nodes in 21 countries funded through the EU Safer Internet Programme, organises Safer Internet Day. Safer ...  A link to the Blogathon Website
